Students from Manor Lakes College visited Aegis Park on Monday to watch North Melbourne hard at work during pre-season training. The grade 10 students are the first from the school to participate in a brand new AFL program being introduced next year in partnership with the North Melbourne and Werribee Football Clubs.

The VET accredited sport and recreation course teaches the students a variety of things such as AFL theory, skills and training tactics and how to devise their own fitness programs. PE teacher Peter Walsh will be overseeing the football program and says his students are really excited to get started.

“We have a few kids who are on the Western Jets list so our relationship with North Melbourne and Werribee is really valuable,” Walsh told kangaroos.com.au.

“It’s fantastic to have both clubs supporting this program as our students get to see and learn about the demands of elite level football.”

It’s not only the boys getting involved in the football course, with several female students also participating.

“The girls get to learn what sort of role they can play in an AFL football club, whether it be in sports science, physiotherapy or in sports administration.

“We hope this program will assist in creating pathways for young girls and boys to progress into a career in a sporting organisation.

Connor Yeoell plays with the Jets and can’t wait to get started with the football program next year.

“I’m looking forward to improving on my footy by watching how these players go about it. I was going to move to a footy school so it’s good we have this program now.”

“I look up to Drew Petrie because he’s such a good player.”
