The midfield star began his senior career at South Fremantle, winning a state guernsey in his first season and the Sandover medal in 1986.

Malarkey was one of the elite full backs of the 1970s and 1980s. He started with East Perth, where he played 101 games. Malarkey was a member of East Perth’s 1972 premiership team and won the best & fairest in 1973. He moved to the Cats in 1977 and went on to play 172 games. Malarkey twice won All Australian honours, being named in 1979 and 1983.
