ST KILDA ruckman Steven King says the finals experience of senior Saints is a key ingredient in the team's bid for September glory.

"I think it's pretty calming knowing that we've a fair few players that have played a lot of finals footy, under immense pressure just doing the basics well," King said on Thursday.

"Sometimes the simpler you can keep things in a big game the better you are.

"We've got a lot of experience among the boys that have played finals footy and under that extreme heat know how to guide other players about playing their roles on the team for each other."

This time last year the former Cat was preparing for the VFL grand final, where his performance won him a recall to the senior side for the Toyota AFL Grand Final.

Traded weeks after being awarded his premiership medallion, King said this season had been about repaying the faith shown in him by the Saints.

"To be given an opportunity to continue my career is something I'm really grateful for," he said.

"I wanted to repay the faith shown in me and contribute every week and try to be competitive in each contest in each game.

"I think it's been an up and down year in some stages – to still be alive at this time of year playing in a prelim is a pretty good result."

King isn't the only Saint enjoying his time in the ruck.

Teammate Jason Blake has also enjoyed having him there and freeing him up for defensive duties.

"The last few weeks have been great playing down back with Maxie (Hudghton) and Sam Fisher and those guys.

"Having Kingy there is great. Having elite ruckmen there really makes a difference in the middle."
