The North Melbourne Football Club has joined the MY ROOM fundraising organisation in the fight against childhood cancer.

The Kangaroos will help promote the charity in the lead up to their Friday night blockbuster against Carlton and will also be donating one dollar for every person who attends the game.

“More children die from cancer than any other disease and after visiting some of the wards at the Royal Children’s Hospital, we felt compelled to help the MY ROOM charity as much as possible,” North chief executive Eugene Arocca told kangaroos.com.au.

“We’ve had Michael Firrito and Hamish McIntosh visit as well and help spread a bit of cheer among the young kids in the hospital and it’s crucial that North Melbourne and Carlton supporters come to the match to support this cause. The more people, the more money MY ROOM will receive.”

“My Room is delighted to have formed a partnership with the North Melbourne Football Club in raising funds to support children with cancer. We remain grateful to the club for its enthusiasm, fundraising activities and hospital visits which are always a highlight for the kids,” MY ROOM Chairman James Roche said.

“Every dollar raised on the night will go directly towards supporting the clinical and research endeavours at the Children’s Cancer Centre at Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital.”

One in four children with cancer do not survive and in Australia alone more than 200 helpless children are tragically lost to cancer each year.

“It’s incredibly sad going through the different wards,” Firrito said.

“Many of these children spend most of their young lives in and out of hospital and haven’t had the chance to enjoy being young. It’s also tough on their families who must go through a tremendous amount of stress and heartache.”

MY ROOM was created in 1993 to support the Children's Cancer Centre at the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne and each dollar raised goes toward clinical and research endeavours, improvement of physical facilities and support for children with cancer and their families.

“Football has always been a fantastic vehicle for causes like this and we’re just trying to do our bit in helping raise awareness and funds for MY ROOM and the Royal Children’s,” McIntosh said.

“We hope North supporters can jump online and donate or give some money to the volunteers who will be accepting donations around the ground before the match against Carlton.”

Volunteers and donors have raised over $11 million in funds which has been used to provide high-tech equipment as well as the refurbishment and design of the cancer ward and out-patient areas at the Children's Cancer Centre.

“We’ll be celebrating 25 years of Friday night footy but there’ll be a real focus on achieving some goals for My ROOM and the children who continue to fight for their health every day,” Arocca added.
