Byrnes, who turns 21 on Thursday, has turned in two slashing performances for the Cats so far in 2005, with 14 touches and two goals against Richmond in the season-opener, followed by 24 touches and another two goals against West Coast in Perth on Saturday night.
Byrnes was the last player selected by Geelong in the 2002 rookie draft, recruited from the Murray Bushrangers, and first played against Sydney late last year. He played four games for the Cats in 2004.
