JOEL Selwood says he and premiership teammate Gary Ablett are both in contract negotiations with Geelong, and hope to soon end the stories that they're moving north.

With Team GWS coach Kevin Sheedy recently suggesting he would target Selwood as his inaugural skipper, and Ablett's brother Nathan signing with the Gold Coast for its VFL season, rumours about the pair leaving the Cats simply won't stop.

Both franchises will have money to spare given the generous start-up salary cap concessions they have received, and neither of the players are contracted past the end of 2010.

Selwood and Ablett were questioned at the media conference called to announce Cameron Ling as the Cats' new captain, and Selwood sounded positive about the likelihood of their future at Skilled Stadium.

"This is a great club with a great history and I'm like Gary, going through contract talks at the moment. Hopefully we'll get them done soon enough so we can both get our names out of the paper and not be linked to all these clubs," he said.

"We're here and we're contracted for 2010, and we're looking to play some good footy in 2010."

Asked if the media could read into that statement that both players wanted to stay with the Cats, Selwood laughed: "You can write and read what you want, I don't care."

Chief executive Brian Cook didn't clarify the situation when he light-heartedly added his contribution: "I think you can read into it that there's no intention of leaving at this stage."

But Ablett wouldn't be drawn too far into the discussion.

"I think that's something we'll keep under wraps for now," he said.

"We're working with the club - love the club, love playing here, and you get all this stuff that gets written in the paper.

"But I try not to read it, and I'm sure the club doesn't read too much into it either.

"As time goes on, I'm sure something will come out about it."

Gary Ablett averaged 118.79 points as a midfielder in last year’s Toyota AFL Dream Team.
