ESSENDON has decided to cut its losses with first-year recruit Mark Williams, sending the former Hawk in for season-ending ankle surgery.

Williams has managed just four senior appearances since crossing from Hawthorn but has been troubled by an ankle injury for much of his first year at Windy Hill.

The Bombers had hoped to be able to nurse him through the season in the hope he may be able to return to the top level in the latter part of the year.

However with Williams struggling to recover, and Essendon also battling for form, the club has made the decision to send the 27-year-old in for an operation to repair the damage.

“We have reached the conclusion that the time is right for Mark to have surgery and that will happen next week,” Bombers football manager Paul Hamilton said.

“He will have his ankle operated on and will then undergo a period of rehabilitation.

“Having surgery now will allow him to be fit and firing and ready to go on day one of pre-season training.”

The decision brings to an end a disappointing first season for Williams in Essendon colours.

Coach Matthew Knights had hoped the sharp-shooter would bring some much-needed potency to his forward line, especially given the retirements of goalkickers Matthew Lloyd and Scott Lucas.

But Williams played just the first four matches of the year. He did boot four goals in Essendon’s round three win over Carlton but didn’t manage more than 10 disposals in any of his games.

He was later dropped to the VFL and then struggled with injury, his work ethic also being tested as he battled to regain his spot at senior level.

“This injury happened fairly early in the season and has limited his impact over a period of time,” Hamilton told essendonfc.com.au.

“While we could manage the injury and have him play more games this year, we think it's best that he has the operation now and starts his recovery for the pre-season.

“We believe a fit and healthy Mark Williams can be a very important player to the club in the 2011 season.”
