FREMANTLE is keeping its options open for its coveted pick No. 3 in Saturday's NAB AFL Draft but whichever way the club goes, the focus will be on getting a quality player who can play for a decade.

Speaking on Monday at pre-season training, general manager of football operations Chris Bond said setting the club up for the future was the priority.

"There are a number of players being thrown around but the main thing for us is that we do have pick three. It's an incredibly exciting time for the club, we will have a couple meetings today and our last list management meeting will be in the middle of the week when we will finalise it," Bond said.

"There are half a dozen or so players around the mark and it's really hard to speculate because it depends on what Melbourne and West Coast do before us. We will get a very talented player that we expect to play a long time at this football club."

While local teenagers Daniel Rich and Stephen Hill are two players in contention, Bond said Fremantle would not be specifically targeting West Australians.

"As soon as this football club starts thinking that we can only get a certain player because they are from WA and we are scared of losing them, we will be heading in the wrong direction," he said.

"We've got to back our footy club and environment to make sure that players that get here finish their career here."

Fremantle has selections three, 21, 24, 37, 53, 56, 68 and 77 on Saturday and say they will definitely use the first seven. However, it is considering saving one pick for the NAB AFL Pre-Season Draft, possibly to select former Brisbane Lion Matthew Moody.

"We will definitely have seven picks but whether we have eight or not might be a decision we make on the day. You then get an idea of what other clubs are doing and our eighth will either be on Saturday or in the pre-season draft," Bond said.

"We've got Moody training at the moment and he's doing really well. It's not our No. 1 priority but certainly we've discussed it and will look at that opportunity. Our priority is to develop our list through youth but Matt and other players will be looked at."

Fremantle was disappointed to lose big man Robert Warnock and the club is a strong chance to take a ruckman with one of its picks on Saturday.

"Robbie going was certainly a hiccup and we would have rather have him stay, but we got two draft picks for him and we are quite happy with that," Bond said.

"Aaron (Sandilands) is an All-Australian ruckman but there is a hole after that. There will be no band-aid fixes involved, though, and we will make sure a ruckman will have time to develop if we bring one in."
