ESSENDON'S bid for an unlikely finals berth could be bolstered by Andrew Lovett's return for the clash with Melbourne at the MCG on Saturday.

But the bad news for the Bombers is that key forward Scott Lucas could miss through injury.

Lovett has served a two-match ban imposed by the club for missing a compulsory training session earlier this month.

Coach Matthew Knights confirmed on Wednesday the Essendon speedster was a chance to come into the side that beat Collingwood by eight goals at the weekend.

“He [Lovett] is available but we’ll finalise our 22 after today’s training session because we have got a couple of boys that are obviously a little bit sore after two or three weeks of hard footy,” Knights said.

Knights said Lovett’s suspension was now “done and dusted” and after playing well for Bendigo at the weekend, the exciting Bomber’s name would be in the selection mix.

Lucas has looked hampered since returning from a posterior cruciate ligament injury and Knights admitted his star might need a rest.

“Scott had some difficulty in the second half last week with a back spasm and also his ankle and knee have been a little bit of an issue for him over the last five or six weeks … he’d have to be really good today for me to put him out there [at the weekend].”

Despite Essendon pushing strongly for the top eight – having won five of their past six matches – Knights is reluctant to risk one of his most valuable assets.

Instead, he believes a week off might help the goal-kicker freshen up for the final rounds of the season.

“Scott’s a very important player to our team and our set-up,” Knights said.

“We’d love him to be out there but unless he comes through today really well I wouldn’t have thought I’d go with him.”

The potential loss of Lucas would be another blow for the Bombers, who just two weeks ago lost promising forward Jay Neagle to a season-ending ankle injury.

“If Scott goes out of the team it means two big forwards have come out in two weeks,” Knights said.

“In regards to options as in big forwards in the VFL there’s not a lot, to be blunt.

“It might be we just become a little bit smaller in our forward half … the boys are certainly not averse to doing that.”

In other selection news at Windy Hill, Knights said youngsters such as Courtenay Dempsey, Heath Hocking and Darcy Daniher couldn’t yet be considered after playing limited game time with Bendigo last week.

“Those boys will need at least 80 or 90 minutes in the VFL this week to possibly put their names up for selection the week after.”
