The Sydney Swans are pleased to announce a positive increase in membership numbers this year.

The total number of Swans members as published by the AFL for 2010 is 28,671, an increase from the 2009 figure of 26,269.

Sydney Swans chief executive officer Andrew Ireland would like to thank all Club members for their strong support this year. “Members are our lifeblood and everyone at the Swans greatly appreciates the contribution they make to their club,’’ Ireland said.

“We want to send a big thanks to our members in Sydney, Melbourne and across Australia for helping us build a stronger club and grow our support base in 2010.

“Members are our greatest advocates, and I want to emphasise that we will be doing our utmost to ensure you are on board with us again next year,’’ Ireland said.

The increase on last year’s number is a result of the introduction of new membership packages, including an eight-game SCG-only membership which is available in all seating categories.

The total number of Swans members, including those who make a financial contribution but don’t have game access, is 33,598.

While Ireland is happy with the growth, he says the Club can only continue to thrive if the number of fans commiting to membership increases in the coming years.

The financial support from members has a direct benefit for the Club, and in particular the Football Department, enabling us to ensure there is a more competitive team on the field.

More members also means there are more people sitting in the stadium to cheer and support the team, creating an atmosphere and an energy that the players can thrive on.

Ireland is urging all red and white fans to get on board and take the step to be members in 2011. “Members are essential to a strong future for the club, but it’s a two-way relationship and we will work hard to provide the best experience and services to reward the commitment to the club. We also strongly believe membership gives our fans a sense of belonging and greater connection with their club,’’ Ireland said.

“Fundamentally we need more members. We’re looking forward to an increased level of support from our current members for the 2011 season, but we are also campaigning to attract fans of the Swans who are not yet members of the Club.’’

Besides access to some of the best seats in the house at home games at the SCG and ANZ Stadium, member benefits include exclusive team newsletters, offers from the Club’s corporate partners, loyalty recognition and access to after-match functions.

Ireland said he was confident the Club had a bright future on the field after picking up a number of good players in last year’s draft, and during trade week. “As we have seen this year, we’ve drafted high quality players, with youngsters like Gary Rohan and Lewis Jetta adding real spark to the team,’’ Ireland said.

“And players who came to us through trades, such as Shane Mumford, Ben McGlynn and Josh Kennedy, have performed really well in their first year at the Club and are set to make a strong contribution for years to come as we move to a new phase with John Longmire at the helm.

"John has been an integral part of our success under Paul Roos, and we know he will be doing his best to ensure the Club forges ahead in 2011.''
