Four year old Mackenzie made headlines when he was admitted to Atherton Hospital with a high fever and rash earlier this year.

After being rushed to Cairns Base Hospital where he was diagnosed with Meningococcal disease, Mackenzie was transferred to Brisbane’s Mater Hospital and put on life support.

His family endured an agonising nine-day wait as the little boy battled the voracious disease and were at his bedside when he woke up on 2 April 2008.

In the time since being discharged and with the help of ongoing treatment at the Mater, Mackenzie has slowly started to regain his strength. However, he will require a kidney transplant in the future.
