Lions Captain Jonathan Brown and ruckman Mitch Clark have both been named in the AFL’s initial 40-man All-Australian squad for 2009.

Brown looks almost certain to secure his second All-Australian guernsey this season after leading the competition in contested marks, booting a career-best goal tally of 78 (with at least one more match remaining) and finishing second in the AFL’s 2009 Coleman Medal.

The Lions skipper earned his first - and only - selection in the AFL’s official ‘team of the year’ back in 2007.

Clark could feature in his first All-Australian team this season after a breakthrough season with the Club.

The 21 year-old West Australian has shouldered the Lions’ ruck duties since the beginning of the season and is arguably the form big-man of the competition.

He will be in direct contention with fellow ruckmen Aaron Sandilands (Fremantle) and Hamish McIntosh (North Melbourne) for a spot in the final team of 22.

Lions Vice-Captain Simon Black is among a handful of Lions players who could be considered unlucky to be overlooked in the initial squad this season.

The All-Australian selection panel met today for their final meeting of the 2009 Toyota AFL Premiership Season, to confirm the 40-man squad that is in contention for selection for the 2009 Four’N Twenty All Australian Team.

Under the format introduced in 2007, the All Australian selectors were asked to nominate the leading players in each section of the field - forwards, defenders and midfielders / ruckmen - with the final team of 22 to be named on Monday September 14 in Melbourne.

Geelong supplied eight contenders for this year’s side, followed by St Kilda with seven and Collingwood with six. The squad includes 22 players who have never previously won All Australian selection - including Clark.
