The three-time best and fairest winner, who was in sparkling form in Saturday’s trial match against Fremantle, will be aided by three vice-captains – Shaun Burgoyne, Chad Cornes and Brendon Lade.
All four players are continuing their roles from 2007, the only change being the loss of veteran Michael Wilson as a vice-captain, who will miss the first half of the season through injury.
Power coach Mark Williams said leadership was one of the club’s strengths.
“Given Warren has got through pre-season with flying colours, we had absolutely no hesitation re-appointing him captain for 2008,” Williams said.
“Warren is an outstanding leader, and every year he has been at this club he has improved his leadership.
"Making that role easier will be the fact that he is well supported by Chad, Brendon and Shaun, who were outstanding deputies last year and continue to progress as leaders.
“We have four quality people with the official titles but we also we have our extended leadership group, and a lot of young players who are developing as leaders which is pretty exciting for our future.
"Like many clubs, we put a significant amount of time, effort and money into our leadership program, and feel it’s very important to the growth and success of the club.”
Tredrea said it was an honour to captain the club for a third season.
“I’ve always said I’ve felt privileged to captain this club, a club I’ve barracked for my whole life, and I’m very happy to be doing it again in 2008,” Tredrea said.
“More importantly however, we have a strong group of vice-captains and leaders at our club who’ve developed together and who I think can provide great direction and leadership for our playing group as a whole.
“To have guys like Chad Cornes, Brendon Lade and Shaun Burgoyne as vice-captains speaks volumes for how strong that group is. It’s a pretty lucky position to be in and together we’re looking forward to showing the way as we head into another very exciting year.”
Tredrea was vice-captain of the club for six seasons from 2000 through until 2005, including being acting captain on Grand Final day in 2004, while relieving for Matthew Primus.
Tredrea is the most successful player Port Adelaide has had in its 11 seasons in the AFL. He holds the club’s AFL games record with 210 and AFL goals record with 457. He is the club’s only multiple best-and-fairest winner at AFL level with three John Cahill Medals, as well as three runner-up spots. He has won four All-Australian spots, all at centre half-forward.
Tredrea is only the club’s third captain in the AFL, following Gavin Wanganeen from 1997 until 2000 and Matthew Primus from 2001 until 2005.
As is tradition at the club, the captain will continue to wear the No. 1 guernsey.
