DESPITE the 17-point defeat at the hands of the ‘Big V’, Dream Team player Brett Burton says his involvement with the best of the rest is the highlight of his career so far.
“It’s been the best week of my footy life,” he said.
“I haven’t played in a grand final so I haven’t had the build up to a really big game like it was tonight so it certainly has been the best week of my footy career to be involved with elite players from the competition… and getting to mingle with Victorian players and be involved with different coaches really was refreshing. I made some good friendships that I’ll take away and some really good memories.”
However the Adelaide Crow insists that the showcase game shouldn’t be an annual fixture.
“I think we should play it every four or five years or whatever. I think if you play it every year it will go like the state of origin. If players aren’t quite right they’ll say, ‘no I’m not going to play’.
“But if they do it every four or five years or whatever they choose then players will really get up for it because they’ll think that it could be the only opportunity in their career to do it.”
Burton kicked two goals for the Dream Team, including the first major of the night which silenced the mainly Victorian support at the MCG.
“Normally if you kick a goal you really hear the crowd so it was a bit different,” he laughed.
“It was good to get that first goal on the board, individually to give yourself a bit of confidence but also to get the team going. I did enjoy that.”
One element of the crowd involvement which Burton especially enjoyed was the Mexican wave which circled the stadium in the final term.
“I was actually on the bench in the last quarter for a rest and I could see it going around and it was exhilarating. It was phenomenal and the noise was unbelievable.”
