DESPITE feeling like a "barnacle on a boat" due to his injury, Richmond’s Matthew Richardson says he's looking forward to having his brother-in-law as coach.

Jade Rawlings was appointed on Saturday to lead Richmond through the rest of the season after Terry Wallace was removed half-way through the last year of his five-year deal.

Richardson talked up his sister's husband, saying he was well-respected, a good communicator and capable of delivering a good spray.

"I haven't played under him at Coburg, and I guess I was always hoping I wouldn't play under him in that regard," Richardson said on Wednesday.

"He'll keep things fairly simple – there's no point re-inventing the wheel half-way through the year.

"He's got the respect of all the players around the place and everyone's comfortable with the decision.

"Jade was the forward-line coach last year and the year before, so I had a lot to do with him for a couple of years, and I was treated like everyone else.

"Just because he's married to my sister, that's his private life, but his job is to coach players at this club and he coached me like anyone else.

"And if I deserve a bake he gives it to me."

Richardson said he hadn't discussed the selection strategies for the rest of the season with Rawlings.

"When you're in rehab you're a bit of a barnacle on a boat, so I'm not involved in all the meetings, so I don't know what his philosophy's going to be.

"I reckon he'll just pick the best team each week, whether that's younger guys or older guys, I guess it's about getting wins for the footy club.

"I guess you'll find out with his selections in the next few weeks."

While still on the sidelines with a hamstring tendon injury, Richardson said he was still ahead of schedule but was hoping to get a month of footy in before the end of the season.

"I'd like to be out there helping the club try to get some wins on the board and supporting the young players and the new coach, but that's not the case,” Richardson said.

"I'm hoping to get out there again by the end of the year and do my bit.

"Realistically, if I got a month of football in at the end of the year that would be a pretty good case.

"I'm back running – as of Wednesday I'll start doing some more acceleration-type running, I've just been jogging up to this stage.

"In the next two or three weeks we'll start picking up the pace and then you probably need two or three weeks of good full training before you can be considered for selection, so the last month probably would be an ideal scenario."
