ST KILDA defender Sam Fisher's night is over after suffering a hit to the head in Friday night's NAB Cup semi-final clash with Essendon.

Fisher went to ground after a marking contest early in the first quarter.

He came from the ground and went straight to the rooms and is understood to be heading for x-rays.

Designated substitute Tom Simpkin entered the play shortly after Fisher's departure.

Fisher had lined up on Bomber Jason Winderlich.

Later it was revealed that damage to Fisher's cheekbone was minimal, and coach Ross Lyon said he was likely to be fit for round one.
