Former rookie-list players Sharrod Wellingham and Brent Macaffer have been elevated to the senior list. Both players spent the 2007 and 2008 seasons on the Magpies’ rookie list, with Wellingham debuting at AFL level in round six, 2008 on ANZAC Day against Essendon after he was temporarily promoted to the senior list in place of the injured Brad Dick. Wellingham went on to play 12 senior games.
Macaffer, joint winner of the club’s best VFL player award this year, also was temporarily elevated to the club’s senior list in 2008 in place of Sean Rusling, however is yet to debut at AFL level.
In another change to the club’s list for the 2009 season, Toby Thoolen has been delisted. Thoolen, 18, was selected from the Bendigo Pioneers with the 47th overall pick in the 2007 AFL draft. Other players to have been delisted since the conclusion of the 2008 season are Sam Iles, Chris Egan and Brodie Holland.
Scott Burns, Shane Wakelin and Ryan Lonie have all retired following season 2008, and during trade week Rhyce Shaw was traded to Sydney with pick 61 for pick 46, while the Magpies received 24-year-old Anthony Corrie from the Brisbane Lions in exchange for pick 93.

That leaves the club with 33 senior-listed players plus two veterans, and subsequently five picks in the 2008 AFL Draft. These picks will be 11, 29, 45, 46 and 77.
In changes to the club’s rookie list, Collingwood recently informed Luke Casey-Leigh he will not be offered a position on the club’s rookie list for season 2009. Meanwhile, former New South Wales scholarship holder Scott Reed has agreed to a two-year deal as a NSW rookie-listed player, and Queenslander Lachlan Keeffe will be officially placed on the rookie list after signing with the Magpies as a pre-selected rookie back in December 2007.
Reed and Keeffe join promising Irishman Kevin Dyas on the rookie list for season 2009, with the club to add four players in the rookie draft on December 16 with selections 11, 27, 43 and 59.
Because the Magpies will have two veterans in 2009, the club can have seven players on its rookie list instead of nine.
