BRISBANE Lions’ star Jonathan Brown has welcomed the arrival of yet another Irish man to the club, with county Laois man Conor Meredith arriving in Australia on Tuesday night to complete a two-week trial with the club.

Although the Lions have signed up to Ricky Nixon’s new recruitment scheme, the 18-year-old was spotted by the football manager Graeme Allan while playing for Dublin City University.

Arriving at the club on Wednesday morning, Brown was one of the first players who Meredith met.

“He’s a pretty well built young fella,” Brown said.

“He’s pretty excited and starry-eyed like all the young fellas that come into the place, like I was once. I haven’t really seen much of him yet out on the paddock. But the Irish guys certainly seem able to get used to our game pretty quickly. Colm Begley has only been here for a couple of years so I’m sure he’ll fit the same mould.”

Brown said he was hopeful that the two week trial would result in the Lions’ attaining the young Irishman’s signature.

“Hopefully he has a good experience for a couple of weeks. The club reckons he’s got enough potential to bring him back and get him going because our other Irish recruit Pearce Hanley has got a terrific future as well. The Irish experiment’s been good for the Lions.”

Brown joked that with three mad Irishmen at the club, disciplinary issues could rear their head in the future.

“They do enjoy a drink the Irish but most of us have Irish blood in us anyway. They bring a real bit of character to the club and enthusiasm to the locker room which is great.

We’ve got a few guys that are a bit more introverted, so having a few of the louder Irish guys around is good. They are only young blokes having a good time. They’ll have to curb their ways like everyone else does but they’re good fun for the time being,” he laughed.
