Chief executive Mark Haysman first identified the top end as a potential market for the cash-strapped Power upon taking over from outgoing boss John James last year.
However the club was reluctant to disadvantage members and supporters by sacrificing any home games at AAMI Stadium.
On Saturday night, President Brett Duncanson used Port Adelaide’s best and fairest awards night to reveal a deal was close to being done.
The proposed partnership with AFL Northern Territory would see the Power play away games in Darwin against the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne, as well as a NAB Cup fixture in Alice Springs.
Duncanson said such a deal would allow the club to capitalise on its strong following in the Territory and would also reap a significant financial reward.
“It’s exciting and I hope there’s a joint announcement with the AFL-NT, the AFL and our footy club because growing our supporter base, crowds and membership numbers is critical,” Duncanson said.
