Despite having won only one of their past 10 matches, the Brisbane Lions refuse to concede that their season is over ahead of this Saturday night’s critical clash against second placed St Kilda at the Gabba.

Lions Vice-Captain Daniel Merrett said on Thursday that his team is confident heading into the match against the more fancied Saints.

Rather than dwelling on the past couple of months, the Club is firmly focussed on the task at hand.

“It’s disappointing to see where we are sitting on the ladder, but that’s all been in the past,” Merrett said.

“We haven’t spoken about Finals either - we’re just living in the now and not thinking too far ahead. We need to get back to those basics - that’s all we’re concentrating on.”

“We’ve committed to each other that we’re not just going to give this year away. We’ll keep moving forward and tough it out.”

The Lions spent last weekend on the Gold Coast together as a group after being afforded a nine-day break courtesy of last week’s Thursday night fixture.

“We’ve had a couple of extra days break which has been good,” Merrett said.

“The boys all had a good bonding session down the Coast and are looking really refreshed.”

The burly full-back will have his hands full this Saturday night with the likely return of key St Kilda forwards Nick Riewoldt and Justin Koschitzke.

“Who I play on will depend on what team they pick,” he said.

“But Kozzi (Justin Koschitzke) was a late withdrawal last week so I am banking on playing on him.”

“It would be good to see Nick Riewoldt out there. It will be a good test for our defenders. He looks fit and ready to go from what I’ve seen so we’re definitely preparing for him to play.”
