Richmond smashed a long-standing hoodoo, with its stirring, come-from-behind victory over the Adelaide Crows at the MCG last Sunday.

It was the Tigers’ first win against Adelaide since 2006, and just the second time this decade that they’ve beaten the Crows.

They went into Sunday’s game having lost 13 of their previous 14 games encounters with Adelaide.

Richmond’s only triumph against the Crows, during that time, came in Round 8 of the ’06 season.  The underdog Tigers hit the front early in that match at Telstra Dome, then proceeded to play keepings-off by cleverly chipping the ball around, and hanging on to record a major upset win - 10.9 (69) to 9.12 (66).

Joel Bowden, in his 200th league game, racked up the amazing stats, across the backline, of 28 kicks, six handballs and 20 marks, while his younger brother, Patrick, also in defence, had 19 kicks, nine handballs and 15 marks.  The three Brownlow votes went to another Tiger backman, Andy Kellaway, who had 17 kicks, six handballs and 15 marks, while ruckman Troy Simmonds collected two Brownlow votes for a performance that netted him 19 kicks, five handballs, 13 marks and two goals.

There were just four members of that victorious Tiger team, who played in last Sunday’s success against Adelaide - captain Chris Newman, Brett Deledio, Shane Tuck and Daniel Jackson.

Back then, Newman was a 24-year-old, playing his 84th game of league football.  He had 16 kicks, three handballs and six marks for the match.  Deledio, a 19-year-old, in just his 30th game of league football, had 14 kicks, six handballs and 11 marks.  Tuck, a 24-year-old, in his 33rd game, had 13 kicks, three handballs and eight marks, while a 20-year-old Jackson, in his 21st game, had four kicks, three handballs and four marks.

You actually have to go all the way back to 1997 to find the previous occasion when Richmond had defeated the Crows at the MCG (notwithstanding the fact Sunday’s match was just the third between the two teams at the venue since then).  That occurred in Round 2 of the 1997 season, with the Tigers 19.14 (128) beating the Crows 15.10 (100).

Best-on-ground that day was Richmond’s superstar forward, Matthew Richardson, who had 15 kicks, five handballs, 14 marks and booted six goals.  Nick Daffy, with 18 kicks, three handballs, five marks, and three goals, was one of the Tigers’ best with three goals, as was Wayne Campbell, with 20 kicks, 15 handballs and three marks, and Paul Broderick with 14 kicks, 12 handballs and four marks.
