A DAY after one of its coaches told a newspaper its VFL affiliate would consider recruiting discarded Saint Andrew Lovett, Carlton has distanced itself from the claims by issuing a statement declaring the Northern Bullants have no interest in the former Bomber.

On Friday The Age reported the Bullants were among three VFL clubs looking at extending the sacked St Kilda recruit a VFL lifeline.

However Carlton chief executive Greg Swann was quick to hose down any talk of Lovett being linked to the Blues, who themselves have had a turbulent pre-season with off-field incidents marring the club’s summer.

“We have spoken to the Bullants in relation to a media report that there may be some interest in recruiting Lovett and the Bullants confirmed there is no interest,” Swann said.

Bullants coach David Teague, also a development coach at the Blues, told The Age he would consider speaking to the Carlton and Preston boards before making a move on the one-time AFL star.

“But if we all thought it would be the best for our footy club, then we'd get him,” Teague said.

The Werribee Tigers, who have a partial alignment with North Melbourne, and Frankston are the two other VFL clubs who are reportedly interested in speaking with Lovett should their clubs’ boards and leadership groups agree.

Lovett was sacked by St Kilda earlier this week after a string of off-field indiscretions, including a rape charge.
