LAST year's grand final combatants will take the field for the first time in 2009 this weekend with both Geelong and Hawthorn loading up on star players.

The Hawks will take on Melbourne in Launceston on Saturday with a squad containing 13 premiership players.

Notable absentees include Luke Hodge, Lance Franklin, Jordan Lewis and Trent Croad who are all on the comeback trail from injury.

Of the newcomers, there will be plenty of interest in debutant Ryan Schoenmakers, the club's first-round draft pick from last year.

Fellow draftee Liam Shiels has also been named as have rookies Haydn Kiel, Luke Breust, Riley Milne, Garry Moss, Matthew Suckling and Cameron Stokes.

Their opponents, the Demons, will take a strong side to Tasmania led by new skipper James McDonald.

No.1 draft pick Jack Watts is not in the side with Rohan Bail the only 2008 draftee to make the cut.

Geelong will take 16 players from the losing 2008 grand final side into their clash against Adelaide at Telstra Dome on Saturday night.

Jimmy Bartel, Gary Ablett, Matthew Scarlett and Paul Chapman will lead the charge, while first-round draft pick Mitch Brown is set to see his first action.

Rookies Shane Mumford, Jeremy Laidler and Brodie Miles have also been named.

For the Crows, Trent Hentschel is on the verge of returning from a horrific knee injury that has kept him sidelined for two years.

The Adelaide squad also contains veterans Andrew McLeod, Tyson Edwards and Simon Goodwin but also youngsters Patrick Dangerfield, Rory Sloane, Taylor Walker and Jared Petrenko.

Carlton has included blue-chip trio Chris Judd, Brendan Fevola and Nick Stevens in the side to play the Kangaroos at Telstra Dome on Friday night.

However, they have also gone for youth by including debutants Chris Yarran, Mitch Robinson and Jeffery Garlett.

Robert Warnock (foot), Heath Scotland (calf), Andrew Walker (shoulder), Andrew Carrazzo (arm) and Adam Hartlett (knee) will miss.

North Melbourne's squad is headlined by new captain Brent Harvey, Daniel Wells, Drew Petrie and Michael Firrito but also includes boom recruit Jack Ziebell and fellow newcomers Cruize Garlett and Liam Anthony.

Former Magpie Rhyce Shaw will run out for the Sydney Swans for the first time in Canberra on Sunday when they take on Port Adelaide in Canberra.

The Swans' squad contains a smattering of veterans including Brett Kirk, Jarrad McVeigh, Adam Goodes and Darren Jolly while first-round draft pick Lewis Johnston will get his chance to impress as will 24-year-old former Canadian rugby union international, Myke Pike.

Domenic Cassisi will lead the Power into battle for the first time with the man he replaced in the top job, Warren Tredrea, and both Cornes brothers also included.

Fourth pick overall in the 2008 NAB AFL National Draft, Hamish Hartlett, will make the trip and former Tiger Danny Meyer will take the field for his new club for the first time.
