The Swans Reserves had a 58-point win over Ainslie on Saturday at the SCG after a six goal second quarter put them 43 points in front at half time. At quarter time the margin was only 11 points.
The Swans kicked the first goal of the game five minutes into the first quarter through Heath Grundy after he took a mark 25 metres out. Three minutes later Tim Schmidt goaled after Daniel Currie marked and handballed before Ainslie kicked their first goal for the game. Before Ainslie could kick their second Nick Smith goaled for the Swans and Nick Davis closed the quarter with his first goal which put the Swans in the lead by 11 points at the first break.
Currie again had a hand in a Swans’ goal, tapping the ball to Davis who snapped a goal from 40 metres six minutes into the second term. At the nine minute mark Ainslie kicked their only goal for the quarter before the Swans piled on five. Davis kicked his third for the game from 55 metres and Dean Terlich and Aaron Bruce each goaled on the run from 20 metres. In the last ten minutes of the quarter the Swans received two free kicks that resulted in goals, one to Smith who goaled from 50 and the other to Davis.
The third quarter was a different story with each team goaling just once. After Ainslie opened the term with their fourth goal for the game the Swans had a patch of attack but were inaccurate, kicking five points before Terlich marked and goaled from 40 metres on an angle. At three quarter time the margin was 49-points.
Swans’ top-up player Zac Manley opened the last quarter with his first goal for the game and a few minutes later Davis kicked his fifth on the run from 35 metres. After Ainslie managed their last two goals for the game, Grundy goaled from the goal square after a free kick. Jake Orreal also goaled from a free kick 20 metres out.
Experienced Swans Nic Fosdike and Ben Mathews were the best for the Swans, playing in the midfield, in the 58-point win. As were Ryan Brabazon, on the wing, and Peter Faulks who played in defence. Ruckman Daniel Currie and Matthew O’Dwyer, who also played on the wing, were good as well.
The Swans Reserves now sit fairly comfortably in second place and take on Tuggeranong, who are currently sitting on the bottom of the ladder next week. The game will be played on Saturday June 21 at 2pm at Greenway Oval.
