Sheehan, a former Geelong player and the doyen of the AFL's game development program, said it was an issue the AFL was seriously considering for next year and beyond.
"There has been a discussion this week about three games in eight days and whether, into the future, we look at having one of the games a week or a fortnight ahead of this particular championships week," Sheehan said.
"Victoria might play a game in WA and it might be Vic Metro or Vic Country playing there and the other playing in SA and then coming to Victoria for the final two games - that's being discussed at the moment.
"In second division, it might be Tassie and the Northern Territory heading into Brisbane and Sydney to play the first round of matches, so all of those things are being considered because the welfare of the players is the utmost concern to us, in terms of the work rate."
Sheehan pointed to respective captains - Vic Metro's Marc Murphy and Western Australia's Andrew Swallow - from this year's championships, as perfect examples of players who needed longer breaks during the tournament.
"We've looked at the amount of kilometres that some of these players run and the midfielders are running 14 kms in the games, so I'd expect that Marc Murphy completed a marathon this week, running over 40 kms, and Andrew Swallow's the same," Sheehan said.
"I know that their states will ease them up a bit in the next couple of weeks and give them a bit of a rest, but I think the AFL just needs to consider whether there is a better way of running this, given the terrific high intensity of these games.
"They're played at a high level and that factor needs to be taken into account as we schedule matches for the future."
