ADELAIDE coach Neil Craig says the club faces an ongoing challenge to manage speculation over Taylor Walker's future, following suggestions from a former player that the out-of-contract forward has already agreed to join Greater Western Sydney next season.

Walker is one of a growing number of uncontracted players to be linked to the Giants.

The talented 20-year-old and his management have put off contract negotiations with the Crows until the end of the season.

Last weekend, ex-ruckman Rhett Biglands told TripleM he had it "on good authority" that Walker was poised to accept a lucrative deal to join GWS.

Adelaide football operations manager Phil Harper refuted the claim on FIVEaa, saying it was "way off the mark".

The Crows experienced a similar situation last season when All Australian defender Nathan Bock delayed re-signing with the club.

Bock eventually came clean about his intention to join Gold Coast.

Forward Kurt Tippett was also in the Suns' sights ahead of their entry into the AFL, but the Queenslander accepted less money to remain at West Lakes.

Craig said the club had little choice but to endure another six months of innuendo surrounding Walker and its other uncontracted players, which include skipper Nathan van Berlo and best-and-fairest winner Bernie Vince.

"One of the real challenges of working internally at an AFL club is to keep that sort of thing [speculation] at bay because you can't influence it," Craig said on Friday.

"Taylor and his management have made it clear to the club about what they're doing and the last thing Taylor and his management need is to be pestered with all that until things change.

"It's there and it's not going to go away, but you've got to get really good at not [letting the speculation] be an influence on your decision making or what you're doing and if it is you discuss it."

Walker will form part of a three-pronged attack against Fremantle at AAMI Stadium on Saturday, with key forward Kurt Tippett recalled to the team and promising tall Shaun McKernan retaining his place.

During the pre-season, Craig said he couldn’t envisage Walker, Tippett and McKernan playing in the same team.

On Friday, he said he'd changed his thinking on the issue, but that the decision to play three talls wasn't made with Fremantle and its All-Australian ruckman Aaron Sandilands in mind.

"It wasn't [a] necessity to play them [McKernan, Tippett and Walker]," he said.

"In the first round against Hawthorn we saw the influence Shaun had both as a forward playing high up the ground and also as a ruckman. Even though we haven't seen it at AFL [level] yet I'm also keen to expose him to defence because he's played in defence for South Adelaide.

"Taylor Walker grew up playing all his footy in the midfield… so that gives us a little bit of flexibility too.

"If they were just three big guys, who were either going to play in the ruck or play forward, we probably wouldn't have gone with them."

Craig said he expected Tippett to be a bit rusty in his first game back from an ankle injury.

Tippett's last full game was against Freo at Thebarton Oval in the second round of the pre-season competition.

The Crows beat an undermanned Fremantle by 75 points that day, but Craig said the result was irrelevant leading into Saturday's clash.

"The side Fremantle is bringing over tomorrow is completely different to what it was in the NAB Cup," he said.

"They've got a really good squad together, so we get another opportunity to play a finals team from last year. The more of those times we can play to get a gauge of where we're at the better."
