The Hawks team to take on the Bombers at the MCG this Sunday was announced at Waverley Park on Thursday to a room full of Hawthorn greats at the annual Trainer’s Turn.

Over 200 Hawthorn past and present presidents, coaches, players, trainers and their families filled the Waverley Park gym, the home of the Hawthorn Football Club.

Amongst the throng was current President Jeff Kennett, legendary coaches John Kennedy Senior and Allan Jeans, past players Peter Knights, 1971 Premiership Ruckman Ken Beck, Norm Gross, Leon Rice, Michael Moncrief and Ian Paton, whist retired head trainer John Howard, lead some of Hawthorn’s most colourful retired backroom staff.

Some other past players included, former Hawk tough man of the ‘60’s ‘delicate’ Des Dickson, 1961 Premiership player Phil Hay, Hawks three time Premiership player Russell Greene, 1978 Premiership back pocket player Alle De Wolde and 1976 Premiership Ruckman Bernie Jones

Also in attendance Legendry Hawks and Life members John “Bones” O’Mahony, Roy Simmonds and Jack McLeod

Former Header Trainer, Ken Goddard, rang the bell to announce this week’s team, and then introduced to the gathering – some of Hawthorn’s greats.

The room fell silent, while John Kennedy Senior and Allan Jeans joined Goddard, who was standing on chairs to match Kennedy’s towering figure.  The two former coaches recounted several stories which had the quiet room punctured only with cheers and laughter, as the room remembered all that had been given.

Beers were shared with old mates and the odd dim sim and potato cake followed, just like the old days. The Trainers Turn was a weekly tradition at Glenferrie Road in days gone by, where trainers and players would enjoy a chat over some simple tucker – while waiting for the week’s team to be announced.

Now in its second year at Waverley Park, the event brought so many old Hawthorn friends together, and, according to Peter Knights, it was great to catch up with some old mates, and share a few memories.

“The trainers night is part of the Hawthorn tradition. Players and trainers would mingle after training on a Thursday night and it was something that typified the feeling and spirit of the Club.”

“It’s great for past and current players to rub shoulders and to continue the spirit of the trainers function,” Knights said.

The Hawthorn Football Club Trainers Turn is an annual event held at the Waverley Park training complex and is open to all past and present players, trainers, and their families.
