The AFL's general manager of football operations has weighed in on the Mathew Stokes situation.

"Earlier today we were informed by the Geelong Football Club and Victoria Police about charges brought against Geelong player Matthew Stokes for possession and trafficking of cocaine as part of a drug operation by police," Anderson said.

"Matthew Stokes has appeared in Geelong Magistrates Court this afternoon. The charge of trafficking is a very serious matter and one that the club and the AFL are treating extremely seriously.

"The AFL supports the Geelong Football’s Club’s decision to stand down Matthew Stokes until further notice. Under the WADA code, standard penalties for those found guilty of trafficking range from a four-year suspension, to a lifetime ban.

"We will continue to seek more details from Geelong and Victoria Police and monitor the issue."
