PORT Adelaide will spend the next few days trying to convince Ben Jacobs to stay at the club, after the Power failed to agree to a deal with North Melbourne for the homesick midfielder.

The Power also didn't rule out re-drafting the 20-year-old if he nominates for next month's NAB AFL Draft. 

The Kangaroos were unwilling to swap their first pick at the draft (No.15 overall) in a deal for Jacobs, and Port Adelaide did not accept North's package of picks 38 and 56.

It ended in a stalemate, leaving the Power with the job of talking Jacobs into reconsidering his position.

"We'll be speaking with Benny in the days to come to try to convince him to stay and if he chooses to nominate for the draft, we'll consider picking him," Power football manager Peter Rohde told portadelaidefc.com.au.

Rohde said the club had tried to send Jacobs to his club of choice, but wouldn't lose the former No.16 draft pick for a late pick.

"Ben is a player we rate very highly and we consistently said that pick 38 and 56 wouldn’t get the deal done," Rohde said. ??

"We wouldn't have used those picks in the draft so we would have effectively been giving Ben away for nothing. We were after something that would have improved our draft position from pick 30. ??

"It was important to us that we get fair value. We stood our ground and we weren’t going to accept a deal that didn’t benefit us at all."

Jacobs' manager Paul Connors told AFL.com.au's Gillette Trade Radio he understood why the deal could not be reached, but didn't commit to Jacobs' next move.

"North didn't over-promise at the start," Connors said.

"I understand Port Adelaide's view, they couldn't use 38, they think they're going to the draft with three picks and a pre-season pick.

"I'll go and talk to Ben and his family and we'll work from there."

North Melbourne was unavailable for comment at Etihad Stadium after Friday's 2pm deadline.
