Being healthy is not just about the physical. Not only do we need to look after ourselves through exercise and eating well, we also need to look after our minds. Around one out of every four Australians aged between 16-24 experience mental health problems during adolescence1, so primary schools are in a key position to build the resilience and social skills that can help students navigate their way through difficult times in their lives.
World Mental Health Day is October 10 and its aim is to raise public awareness about mental health issues, so this month we’re looking at the issue of bullying, which can have a devastating effect on the mental health of some students, and look at how resilience plays a major role in overall health.
World Mental Health Day is an initiative of the World Health Organisation(WHO)
TEACHERS
Lesson on Leisure: Playing With Friends
Students will devise a plan for getting active in their leisure time with a family member or friend who lives close by.
Every student deserves to feel safe at school. Bullying behaviours among students can be a significant challenge for schools to tackle - particularly when they are hidden.
KIDS
Being healthy is not just about looking after our bodies - we also have to pay attention to our minds too.
PARENTS
Bullying can seriously impact a child’s sense of security and wellbeing - no matter what their age. Fortunately, dealing with it promptly and appropriately can make a real difference.
How can teachers help foster resilience in their students? And what role does resilience play in overall health?
