GOLD COAST defender Jarrod Harbrow is confident his young team can start to produce improved performances now that first game nerves are no longer a factor.

Harbrow believes the hype surrounding the club's AFL debut against Carlton may have contributed to the size of the 119-point loss.

"We were probably a bit too excited last week I reckon," Harbrow said on Wednesday.

"That should be well and truly out of our game now.

"The stage fright, the first game nerves for a lot of the younger players are out of the way and we can go out and concentrate on playing consistent AFL football, which is what we have to get used to now."

Harbrow, taking on his former team for the first time, is determined to put in an improved personal performance after his 19 touch effort against the Blues.

"I've definitely got to pick up my game," he said. "I'm not happy with last week's game.

"I've got to get back to basics, win my own football and take it from there."

The 22 year-old isn't expecting any harsh treatment from his ex-teammates.

"I left the Bulldogs on a good note and I think I gave everything to the Bulldogs, so it's nothing personal," he said.

"It's just going to be exciting playing against my old team. I've still got a couple of good mates there.

"A couple of players might (try to rough me up a bit), but that's pretty normal I think."

Harbrow said the key to being competitive against the Bulldogs would be to slow them down.

"They're a kicking team, a fast flowing team, so if we can stop their run, get in there, get our hands dirty, win the footy first, then I think that'll shut their run down and we'll play more on our terms," he said.
