THE CROWS have been perched in fourth spot on the AFL ladder since round six, but skipper Simon Goodwin says the club has set its sights no higher than just making the eight.

Yet.

Critics have questioned the Crows’ credibility as a premiership contender given that just one of the club’s wins this season has been against a current top eight side.

Adelaide will tackle Hawthorn, the Brisbane Lions, Geelong and Collingwood in the next month, but Goodwin said each of the remaining 11 games would be tough.

"As a footy club we always aim to make finals," he said. "Realistically, 12 wins is finals footy and that’s what we’re looking at, at this stage.

"In AFL footy you don’t just come out and say this one is going to be tough and this one is going to be easy. You just come out and play and that’s how we’re looking at the next 11 weeks.

"We want to perform as well as we can. We’re in a good position for where we want to be and hopefully we can take advantage of that."

Goodwin said the Crows were looking to rectify the slow starts that have plagued the team over the past three weeks, but the biggest hurdle Adelaide faces on Saturday night will, undoubtedly, come in the form of Hawthorn’s 196cm, 101kg superstar Lance Franklin.

Buddy has booted 13 goals in his past two outings against Adelaide, including the match winner in the 2007 elimination final.

Coach Neil Craig has tried several opponents on Franklin in the past including Kris Massie, Nathan Bock, Ben Rutten and Nathan Bassett, but how do the Crows stop Buddy from ruining their plans this week?

"That’s the million dollar question, isn’t it?" Goodwin posed.

"Buddy is a class player. He’s kicking a lot of goals and, not only that, but he’s getting a lot of scoring shots. Our midfield pressure and contested ball are going to be very important for our defence."

Goodwin gave Franklin the nod as the best player in the competition, but said he would back either of Bock or Rutten to stand him.

"We’ve got some quality defenders in Bock and Rutten and those guys have got big jobs this week," he said.

"We haven’t even looked at the specific match-up for Buddy yet, but at this stage we’re really backing our midfield in to win the contested footy and to limit his supply.

"He’s a forward that is kicking plenty of goals and when you’ve got those guys in the competition, they’re really hard to stop. He’s going to be a big name in footy for a long period of time.

"We’re looking forward to playing against him. He’s done well against us previously and we’d like to do better."
