Sandringham Senior Coach Andy Lovell gives his weekly VFL update following the seniors close 1 Goal loss to Coburg and the reserves having a disappointing loss.

VFL Seniors
Sandringham:  3.1.19  -  8.6.54  -  9.8.62  -  13.10.88
Coburg Tigers: 14.5.29  -  5.5.35  -  11.8.74  -  14.10.94

Jace Bode - Stats: 18 Possessions, 6 Marks, 3 Tackles
Jace already had the difficult circumstances of being the emergency for the AFL match, which made it difficult for him to prepare. When he did take the field, he was down on his usual performance, but he has been outstanding for us this year, with both form and attitude. His primary job was to play on Tivendale, and he got beaten by on the day. He was still able to attract the ball, having 18 possessions, but by his standards he struggled to have an impact on the game.

Ben Holland - Stats: 16 Possessions, 4 Marks, 5 Tackles, 2 Goals
Ben had a really good first half. His work rate was really high, and he led up at the ball and gave us a good target across half forward. He was really mobile and was right into the game. He didn’t have as big an impact in the second half, but he still worked hard to present us with a target, and finished up with 16 possessions and two goals.

Nathan Carroll - Stats: 16 Possessions, 6 Marks, 4 Tackles, 12 Assists
Nathan played as a tall defender and beat his man. He was able to give us good rebound off half back, and finished with 16 touches. He was disciplined and played the game with real purpose. He put the disappointment behind him of being omitted from the AFL side, and his attitude and approach to the game was outstanding. This was one of Nathan’s better games for the year.

Ricky Petterd - Stats: 15 Possessions, 5 Marks, 9 Tackles, 4 Goals
Ricky played midfield and half forward, which was something different for him after playing a lot of his footy off half back. His attack on the footy was good, and to be able to push forward and kick four goals was a good effort. His work rate dropped off a little bit in the second half, but his first half of football was very good.

John Meesen - Stats: 11 Possessions, 7 Marks, 3 Tackles, 11 Assists
John played his best game since arriving at the Club. He spread from stoppages, and his running was much better. It was a much more confident effort by him, as he just backed his ability, which was encouraging. He also showed more of that competitive spirit which we have been looking for, which is also pleasing.

Jack Grimes - Stats: 8 Possessions, 5 Tackles, 7 Assists
Jack played across half back and only got eight possessions. He was steady, but he wasn’t as good as the week before.  He again didn’t look out of place, but he just needed to get more of the footy, so that he could have impacted the game in a bigger way. He is showing definite signs of improvement, and he got through another game of senior football, which is also pleasing.

Jake Spencer - Stats: 4 Possessions, 2 Marks, 1 Assist
Jake rucked reasonably well, but again, he just needed to get more of the football. His aggression was pleasing, and he did take a couple of really good contested marks. There are parts of his game that are terrific, but he just needs to work on his running patterns so that he gets more of the ball.

VFL Reserves
Sandringham:  2.1.13  -  3.2.20  -  3.4.22  -  5.7.37
Coburg Tigers: 5.5.35  -  9.9.63  -  12.13.85  -  16.14.110

Kyle Cheney - Stats: 25 Possessions, 4 Marks,  3 Tackles
Kyle battled away really hard in a depleted reserves team. We had our most inexperienced team on the park this year, and we were playing the top team in Coburg. He played everywhere on the field. He collected 25 touches in his second game back from injury. He followed up on his outstanding performance two weeks ago with a good, solid contribution.

Trent Zomer - Stats: 13 Possessions, 5 Marks, 7 Tackles
Trent’s work rate and work ethic were down on previous weeks. He played back as a key defender, but got beaten by his man. At times he competed quite well in a one-on-one contest, but his work rate definitely let him down, and it was generally a down day by his standards.

Isaac Weetra - Stats: 9 Possessions, 2 Marks, 3 Tackles 1 Goal
Isaac’s work rate and work ethic were both at a reasonably good level, and those have been key focuses for him. He didn’t get his hands on the ball as much as in previous weeks, but he gave himself a chance because of his work rate. There were some definite positives in his game, but he just needed to get more of the footy.
