The Robert Rose Cup was first struck in 2000 to commemorate Robert’s contribution to sport and, more importantly, to raise funds for the Robert Rose Foundation. The foundation provides support to those with spinal injuries to help achieve a desired quality of life.
Robert Rose was a brilliant athlete who played cricket for Victoria and football for both the Collingwood and Footscray Football Clubs. At 22 years of age, and at the height of his career, he became a quadriplegic in a car accident.
This year the Robert Rose Cup will be presented by Lucas Dumbrell who is a special guest of the Collingwood Football Club and the Robert Rose Foundation.
At the age of 19, Lucas Dumbrell became a quadriplegic after a racing car accident at Oran Park in 2008. This year Lucas has successfully launched Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport and is managing his own V8 Supercars team which also competes against his brother Paul, who is a V8 Supercar driver.
Supporters heading to Sunday's match will be looking for a similar thriller ending which occurred in last year's one-point Collingwood win. The Magpies managed to build a 34-point lead heading into the final term before the Dogs piled on six late goals to storm back.
A Dale Thomas goal with 90 seconds remaining - it was the Pies only goal in the final term - proved enough for the club to win its seventh consecutive match and its fifth Robert Rose Cup.
