It may have been one day later but not much had changed for Andrew Carrazzo after Carlton’s dismal performance against Collingwood at the MCG on Saturday. Speaking after Sunday morning’s recovery session at Visy Park, Carrazzo echoed the words of Brett Ratten when he spoke of the team’s disappointment at such a poor performance.

“It just wasn’t good enough,” Carrazzo said.

“It was an important game, a big game against Collingwood, and to perform like we did was really disappointing. I think Ratts was fair in his assessment that it was disappointing.

“He (Brett Ratten) has certainly made it very clear on what he thought of the game and he was very honest with everyone after the game. There is no doubt we are all on notice, as we should be,” Carrazzo added.

Carrazzo praised Collingwood on the manner in which they not only played but also how they approached the game but said there was little consolation to be taken from outscoring Collingwood in the final quarter.

“Collingwood are in fantastic form and certainly showed why they are on top of the ladder. However we certainly didn’t do ourselves any favours by sitting back too much waiting for things to happen rather than trying to take the game on. And as for the final quarter it is far more important to focus on what we did, or rather what we didn’t do, when the game was up for grabs. Not on what happened when the game was over.”

At the post match media conference Brett Ratten was stinging in his assessment of the game, or more importantly on the performance of the Carlton team and said it could only be rectified in games. Carrazzo too said it was not a matter to be talked about but rather to be acted on and he believed the six day break would be a benefit as it would give the Blues less time to think about the match.

“We are under no illusions about yesterday’s performance,” Carrazzo said.

“There is no real point talking about what we need to do; only actions will be acceptable. I think the six day break (Carlton play Essendon at the MCG on Friday night) is a good thing as we need to quickly review and then get on with our next match.

When asked about the importance of this week’s match against Essendon and the impact yesterday’s performance had on Carlton playing finals, Carrazzo said all of Carlton’s remaining games were virtual ‘8-point matches’.

Friday night’s match, like all our matches now, is really important, the old 8-point game as important matches are often referred to. Sure if the finals were based on one performance like yesterday we you would question our position but the fact is making the finals is about 22 games and being one of the best eight teams over the entire season.

“Playing finals this year has always been our objective and it still is,” said Carrazzo

After a long post game meeting with the coaches the team was back at Visy Park on Sunday for a recovery session and then a full and frank review of yesterday’s performance.
