BRISBANE is likely to be without veteran half-back Daniel Rich for Friday night's match against Essendon after he suffered a hamstring injury on Sunday night.

Meanwhile, Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin was left scratching his head over a score review late in the final term that stalled his side's momentum in their eventual four-point loss at Metricon Stadium.

Coach Chris Fagan said it wasn't a serious problem, but with just five days between matches, Rich was a likely scratching.

"It was obviously not good enough to go back on, so he'll get scans tomorrow (Monday) and an assessment," Fagan said. 

"I wouldn't think he'd be right in five days, unless it's a nerve-related thing. 

"It certainly wasn't one where he couldn't run or pulled up short. He could still run … we'll just see."

Rich's injury was the only blight on a gripping victory. 

Fagan said aside from 10 minutes of "helter skelter" play in the last quarter where Brisbane's lead dwindled from 18 points to two, he was delighted with the performance. 

The Lions thrashed the vaunted Demons' midfield in tight, winning the clearance count 35-22 and also edging them in contested footy (124-118).

Melbourne reported a clean bill of health after the game but Goodwin was baffled by a decision to call for a DrinkWise score review on the behind line late in the match. 

With the Demons trailing by three points and less than three minutes remaining in the game, Jake Lever marked the ball on the goalline and began a chain of possessions that left Christian Salem free near the 50m arc, but the ball was called back for a score review. 

The resulting "no score" call confirmed the umpire's tentative decision but robbed Melbourne of momentum at a crucial time in a hard-fought contest.

"I'm not quite sure how the score review works," Goodwin said. 

"We've got this fancy ARC system but it halted momentum in the game and I don't think that's what it was brought in for, to halt momentum in the game.

"We were out, we had our opportunity. It's not the reason why we lost the game, but it certainly didn't help … it is what it is and hopefully we'll get the ARC system better. 

"It's nice and fancy but it's not doing much."

Goodwin said he was disappointed his team couldn't execute its skills under pressure. 

"We are disappointed as a club. We came here to win. We want to be a winning club and we didn't do that," he said. 

"Brisbane executed the basics better. They were a little bit better at clearance, they were a little bit better in the way they defended and hunted in contest areas. 

"They were more disciplined and critical moments were theirs. They are a very good side for a reason."
