It was a surprise to many Atley slipped as low as pick 17 in the 2010 National Draft, and his first-year output supported that argument.
The Kangaroos' were rapt to snare the dashing midfielder and Atley was quick to make an impact in his round one debut.
At just 18 years of age, he was able to secure a regular spot and played the first 14 games of the year.
Brad Scott praised him after the round 11 win against Adelaide.
"Some of the things Shaun Atley was able to do today gave a glimpse of what a good player he's going to be," Scott said.
Despite his great progress, knee soreness affected him late in the season and he missed several games, as well as spending time in the VFL.
He did return for round 24 though and had 15 possessions.
