WEST COAST coach John Worsfold says midfielder Daniel Kerr will have to learn to deal with a tag as his best form begins to return.

Kerr flew out of the blocks on Sunday against Essendon with 14 touches, including four clearances and four inside 50s, and a goal in the first quarter.

But his freedom didn't last long with Bombers coach James Hird engaging Heath Hocking to help curb Kerr's influence on the game after quarter-time.

Hocking did brilliantly, restricting Kerr to just 14 more disposals for the rest of the game (just two in the last quarter), whilst having an impact himself with 15 touches and two goals.

Although Kerr finished with 28 disposals, his best for 2011, his influence on the game was limited after the first term and while Worsfold would like to offer his premiership midfielder more protection against hard tags, it's not something he can always afford to do.

"Kerry knows, as all players do, there's times when you wear a bit of heat and it opens up other teammates to get clearances," Worsfold said after the Eagles 16-point loss to Essendon.

"So Kerry's aware there are times when he won't be able to be blocked and left free but that's because that's not his role at the stoppage."

It has been a long journey back for the injury-plagued 27-year-old who has only managed 26 games in the past three seasons.

He played just four games last season with a serious hamstring injury in round five ending his season prematurely.

But as he continues to get matches under his belt, Kerr has begun to find some form, starting last week with an impressive 27-disposal game in the win against Melbourne.

"We want Kerry to keep getting through games of footy at the moment and get used to what he can do again," Worsfold said.

"We're seeing some really good signs, and it's not far away until he gets back to his match-hardened self, and he's up for the challenge."

Kerr missed the local derby last year with the hamstring injury and the challenge will be for him to hold his own against Fremantle, who will no doubt have him in their sights.

The 27-year-old hasn't impressed in a derby since 2008 when his 33-disposal performance earned him two Brownlow votes, and Eagles fans will be hoping he can show glimpses of that form next Sunday at Patersons Stadium.
