Today, the Western Bulldogs announce the retirement of arguably the Club’s most celebrated player, our Club’s games record holder and inspirational Captain Brad Johnson.

When he debuted in 1994 no one could have expected the impact that this champion would have both on and off the field. He has been a shining light for the Club since his arrival and is a true champion of the game.

His achievements and career highlights are too long to list but one thing is certain, the ‘Smiling Assassin’ will finish his career as a Legend of the Western Bulldogs and the AFL.

Thank-you to everyone who submitted comments and wishes, they have been passed on to Johnno who is very appreciative of your support.

We look forward to your support in season 2011.

Thankyou Dale Morris for signing our club jumper and backpack at training last Friday. We loved it and we got free tickets to Saturday night's game against Sydney, the first game we have been to this year. We were so happy the Bulldogs won. We hope you get to play this Saturday night.

I'm hoping that this isn't taken as a crank message but
I just wish to pass on something that I I discovered today. With my hands sore with arthritis I decided to try
Dick Wicks magnetic wrist bands. But also suffering every day for 18months with an achillies problem I decided to try it around my ankle. I swear that my ankle feels so much better. For once I'm not limping
When I get up from sitting. Maybe its been tried.
A keen Bulldog Supporter.

Congratulations Johnno and thank you for bringing joy into all the bulldogs supporters lives. I remember many occasions where your inspiration and drive got the doggies over the line. Smiling assasin as nicknamed by Rex Hunt, having a nickname likes this will put you into legendary status forever in the minds of young kids kicking the footy around. We all hope that the dogs don't need your last game as inspiration to get over the line on Saturday night. Good luck mate.

congradulations johno you have always been my favorite player and i love watching you play. you are a legend sad to see you go

Darren Blizzard - 3:52 PM Wednesday, September 08, 2010
A sad day, but I guess the sunset has to come eventually. Needless to say your retirement from the game is much harder to take than that of the peroxide blonde fool (he who shalt not be named) who was with the club earlier this year (and is thankfully not now!). May you continue to be the great champion you are on the ground and around the club with whatever your future endeavours may be. I hope the boys can get up of the floor and bounce back and get you into a third successive prelim and give you a shot at finally making a grand final. It will be tough with all the injuries but if anyone deserves his players to bleed for them and to put a win at all costs attitude on - surely it is you mighty Bradley Johnson! I salute you, and you will forever remain one of the mightiest Bulldogs of all time, easily walking tall with the likes of E.J. Whitten, C. Sutton, Sir Douglas Hawkins, T. Liberatore, C.Grant, R.Smith, S.West etc

LES - 3:12 PM Wednesday, September 08, 2010
Hi ya Bud,
Sorry to see the end come, but what a journey. Good to see that over your 17 year career you have not changed one bit.
Chat and see you soon Les.

Michael Fischer and family. - 1:20 PM Wednesday, September 08, 2010
Brad JOHNSON, not only were you a champion of the game but more importantly a great human being. The Bulldogs may not have had the success on the field that they deserve but they have been a standout family club and it is players like yourself that have made it great. Good luck with the future and keep on smiling!

Peta McKenzie - 12:26 PM Wednesday, September 08, 2010

Come on Doggies, we have to send a true champion and legend off in the ultimate way and that is holding the 2010 Premiership cup aloft with his wonderful smile adorning all the front pages of the Sunday newspapers. He has given his heart and soul to this wonderful club and he epitomises all that is wonderful about the game of AFL. He has given fans so much during his stellar career. I have had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of times and he is a champion off the field as well

Kafil Din - 2:46 PM Tuesday, September 07, 2010
Sorry to see you go Brad; you have been an absolute inspiration for so long and been the heart of the team. I can't remember how many times you kicked that goal just when we needed it or made a goal assist out of nothing.
This is sad moment for the Doggies but thank you well done for you unstinting contribution over the years.

Yvonne - 2:30 PM Tuesday, September 07, 2010
We will miss you so greatly Johnno, it has been an absolute pleasure to have been able to watch you play for all of these years. Thankyou so much for everything you have given to not only us fans, but to football in general. I know so many people who barrack for other teams, but they nominate you as their most favorite player outside of their respective teams, that speaks volumes about how much you are admired. We are really looking forward to reading your upcoming book, we hope to get to Borders at Highpoint on Oct 9, to personally thankyou for all the enjoyment you have given us diehard Doggies fans.We have been members for so many years now and will be for many years to come. Go Dogs. Good luck to you and your family in your life post footy and we hope you stick around the Dog kennel lots and keep on inspiring our very talented youngsters in an off field capacity.

Jake Wright - 2:25 PM Tuesday, September 07, 2010

Jasn Fox - 2:05 PM Tuesday, September 07, 2010
Excellent footballer, bloke & team lifter. Thanks for all the great memories, best wishes for the next three games & your future, hopefully still with the bulldogs.

Kazza - 2:04 PM Tuesday, September 07, 2010
Go Johnno! Go Bulldogs! Thanks for the memories. I loved to barrack for you as Johnno and Smithy streamed down the flanks in tandem. I loved to watch you burst forward with a lead to take one of your trademark chest marks. I watched you rally the troops and saw that gut-wrenching look of disappointment when you faced a loss. I roared out with approval when you took on the captaincy. A true professional - missing only a handful of games. A true gentleman - your enthusiastic character such a positive influence. I was glad that you decided to play on at the end of last year, but it was sad to see injury finally catch up with you. You've given your all, Brad - a lot to be proud of. Eighteen men on the field, giving their all, will be the best chance at winning that elusive premiership. I'm still believing.

Margaret - 2:02 PM Tuesday, September 07, 2010
Just wanted to say THANK YOU for being a true "Son of the West" a true champion that will be sadly missed and I do hope you will continue to be part of the Western Bulldogs.

Sam Burt - 1:54 PM Tuesday, September 07, 2010
Brad, I've been a fanatic since I was forced on top of 2 milk crates at the Western Oval from 1992 onwards. I watched your debut at the age of 9 and remember when you Smithy, Darcy, Grant and West were the up and coming saviours of our club at a very dark time. It was the Year of the Dog, and that's the year you came in, its almost as if you've never forgotten how close we came to not being around, and that's how you've always played. Don't let people get to you, remember how much of a champion you are and that your not finished yet. You have games left in you Brad, and perhaps even your best. You kept us alive for a long time, and your role on the football field was only just a part of that. Good lack for Saturday Night, your a champ.

Jim of Chicago USA - 1:36 PM Tuesday, September 07, 2010
I've just returned from a weekend trip to read the news. Brad Johnson is a player I will always remember because of the way he handled himself both on the field and off the field. He is a true gentleman and a worthy "Son of the Scray". Thank you, Brad, for your remarkable career and allowing me, as a member, to enjoy it for so long. Best wishes for the future.

Emma Richardson - 1:08 PM Tuesday, September 07, 2010
Johnno,
I can't imagine how many times I've said or yelled your name in conversation or whilst watching a game of footy. I'm only 21 years of age and you were what inspired me to ignore my dad (a tigers supporter) when I was only around 7 and to follow the dogs. You've been an inspiration to me over the years, and I am full of admiration and respect for what you have achieved on and off the field. I hope to see your wonderful, ever present smile in future. Congratulations on a stellar career. I and thousands of others will miss seeing you out there each week. Best of luck for the future! And as always, Go Dogs!!

Maureen Holman - 12:57 PM Tuesday, September 07, 2010

I have your testimonial mask stuck on my wall in my bedroom next to my Bazza & Brian Lake pictures. I am going to keep it there forever. My dad has lots of pictures of you too in his garage and he reckons that they will be there forever too. I am happy that you let my Mum take a photo of me & you together but I'm a bit sad that I wont see you anymore when we go to Etihad Stadium to watch the footy.
I will still be Johnno when I play footy in the backyard. Go number 6.

To Dear Brad, I and my whole family would like to thank you so very much for the dedication and loyalty you have shown every single Bulldog supporter and member over the last 17 years. You are a true champion in all aspects of the word and deserve eternal recognition at not only the club and AFL but also you deserve recognition for the Western Suburbs. A street, a football ground and a award for loyalty, devotion and excellence in a specific field should be called the Brad Johnson St, Reserve and award. You are to many the true Champion and are to many the equal of Edward James Whitten senior when it comes to devotion to our fabulous club and our districts. I wish you, Donna and family all the very, very best and hope that and I am sure you will comply that you will stay involved with our club for many years to come just like Frank Aked who was involved at our club for 60 years approximate. What is the meaning of the word Champion? I would add the name Brad Johnson to the oxford Australian dictionary.

E.J.Whitten, Legend. Charles Sutton, Legend, Bradley Johnson, Legend.
It will take 3 years to be admitted to not only the AFL hall of fame but also The Footscray Football Club Hall of fame, but you are a Legend for both.
Not only a champion player but a wonderful and generous person for our club.
All the best mate, and have you rung Simon yet? ;-)

The Tirkkonen's of Bacchus Marsh - 9:20 PM Monday, September 06, 2010
A sad goodbye to the most loyal servant of our beloved Bulldogs. It's a shame Brad that you couldn't go out with a premiership medal but you will always be a champion in our eyes. Enjoy your retirement, it's well earned. So Long Johnno, we'll miss you xox

Leanne Allen - 9:06 PM Monday, September 06, 2010
Sitting typing this with tears in my eyes. You're an awesome player and most of all a champion person. The game, the Bulldogs have been bettered by your presence and will be poorer for your departure. Won't be the same next year cheering the Doggies on without you. This year especially, you could see the difference in the team when Johnno was tearing down the wing again when you came back after injury. No doubt we'll see your smiling face on the tv screens next year and hopefully you'll still get to see the beloved red, white and blue carry on your respectful, uncomprimising attitude to the best game in the world. You'll certainly be missed.

Claire - 8:20 PM Monday, September 06, 2010
Thanks for the memories, Johnno. You started playing when I was nine years old and I'm now typing this as a 25 year old married woman, still every bit as in awe of the legend in the number six jumper. Even though you can't leap the way you used to leap (the glory days), you still lead the team with the same spirit and determination you always did. I'll be telling my kids about Johnno one day. You're a true hero and gentleman. Thanks for not saying anything back to Aker, btw- you're all class. I'd buy your autobiography fa shiz! Good luck with the future, Johnno, and finish your career the way many of our greats failed: PREMIERSHIP! Love your work xxx

Mary and Terry Weiland - 8:19 PM Monday, September 06, 2010

You have been my favourite player since you joined the club in 1994 when I was nine. You are the last of a dying breed of football players who play not for the money but with heart and for love of the game. You have always personified the bulldog spirit of loyalty, integrity and honor. These values I hold very dear and will always think of you as a perfect example of them. I wish you and your family the best of luck in the future and hope and pray that you will go out with a bang! COME ON DOGGIES!! THIS IS THE YEAR OF THE DOG!!

Probably the most loved Bulldog, at least since EJ, Thank you seems such an unworthy word Johnno, if your team mates value your contributions half as much as your supporters, you will finish this season with another 3 wins, and the premiership you have long deserved.

Johnno, you have been an absolute champion of the club over the last decade and a half. Thanks for some great memories and brilliant performances. You should be very proud of what has been a fantastic career. I hope this announcement spurs the bulldogs on to a famous win on Saturday night, and beyond.

John Munachen - 3:57 PM Monday, September 06, 2010
Johnno you are an absolute champion who played with no fear and has only ever had the Bulldogs best interests at heart. You have given this club more than it deserves to expect from one player - I just hope we can repay you with a special performance on Saturday Night! Go Dogs and all the best in the future to our #6.

Darren Blizzard - 3:57 PM Monday, September 06, 2010

Hey Johnno three games in a row and the flags is ours... what a way to go out thatd be!!!

Elisabeth - 3:43 PM Monday, September 06, 2010
Brad, you will be missed. From the day she could identify with footy (which I think was about 18 months) my little girl has idolised you. She's now nearly 11 and will have her heart broken for the first time when she hears the news. On her bedroom wall are three prized things - a print of Degas' ballet dancers, the life size Johnno sticker and a handwritten note from you that you sent after she wrote to you earlier this year. You're a top bloke and a bloody brilliant footballer, captain, man and leader. You will be missed forever. I ask the boys to make Saturday a great one, and then the prelim and brilliant one and then the granny the day with cry with joy at winning and with sadness as you finish your astonishing Bulldog playing career. We love you Johnno.

Jo - 3:43 PM Monday, September 06, 2010
What a wonderful career you've had Johnno, you are not only a great player but a true gentlemen and a role model and inspiration to all the bulldogs that played with you over your career but the future kids that wish to play for the red white and blue. Johnno - to me you are a shining example of everything that is great about AFL football; no-one has been a greater influence in building my love for the game since I moved to Australia 8 years ago. You have set the bar for what an AFL footballer should be, and the challenge for the red, white, and blue is to continue to live up to the high standard you have set.
Congratulations on a fantastic career, and I hope you enjoy your well earned retirement.

A champion not only for the Club but the AFL in general both on and off the field. I'm not sure your opponents will miss the 'Smiling Assassin' as you became known. No doubt as one door closes many more will open and enjoy whatever remaining games you play in.

David - 3:29 PM Monday, September 06, 2010
I'm 24 years old, I can't even remember watching my Bulldogs play without Brad Johnson out there. I've been to pretty much all his milestone games.
The 300th stands out where Johnno kicked 5 goals in the second half to pretty much win the game off his own boot, the dvd still gets watched at my place.
Playing footy in the school grounds I always pretended to be number 6. I had some skills but I could never replicate the heart and passion that we saw every week from the real number 6.
Thank you so much for all the memories Johnno, it will be hards seeing the dogs run out with you in the stands. You will always be remembered as a player who got me into this game and the reason I go to every bulldogs game I can to cheer on the Red White and Blue..

Vicki McNamara - 3:28 PM Monday, September 06, 2010
Thanks Johnno for your years of passion and dedication to the Doggies, you will be missed. Go boys for the finals, you can get up against the swans. You are a great family team I am proud to be a supporter. :)

Johnno don't worry about what everyone is saying you are our club legend as big as any name at Footscray/western bulldogs. I am glad to have seen you play. Flag or No flag you will be remembered in only as a BULLDOG THROUGH AND THROUGH. your passion and determination is what this club is all about, a one club player for 350+ games 6 all Australians and 2006 All Australian captain... I guarantee you in 50 years time people will look back at this club and along side EJ, Hawkins and Grant, Johnson will be up there as one of the greatest to wear that red white and blue bulldog. My hat goes off to you and although due to being interstate I will join all Bulldogs fans and be standing and cheering for you the day you run out for the last time. Thanks Johnno number 6 "the Smiling Assassin".

A sad day indeed. All those hits you took, playing way above your height and weight. You were seemingly indestructible... right up until this year. An amazing achievement. It's a great thing you got to play for the team you loved... and lucky for us too. In these days where the word 'legend' is handed out to anyone, today we can frame it and wrap it up for you. THANK YOU for everything.

Mick - 3:15 PM Monday, September 06, 2010

Best wishes for the next phase in your career! Look forward to having a media personality with some valid points of view and opinions that actually have credibility, unlike the 'we won't bother to name twit!'

Dupz - 3:10 PM Monday, September 06, 2010
I feel a little older today - seeing one of my childhood heros call time (although he's only 7 yrs older than me).

You are a testament to everything that is good about the western suburbs. You are the very heart of our community and I wish you all the best brother.
Now, go and win yourself that flag - go out with that fairytale bang!

Steve - 3:09 PM Monday, September 06, 2010
As a Magpie supporter, I've always looked forward to taking on the mighty foes that are the Western Bulldogs, mainly to see, often to our detriment, the awesome force that is 'The Smiling Assassin'. Thanks for all the majestic moments, the awesome displays of professionalism and ,most importantly, for always being a gentleman on and off the ground. You are a man that a great many would do well to emulate. With all our best wishes for all that you choose for your future, Steve.
PS - hopefully you won't disappear from view for too long.

chris r - 3:09 PM Monday, September 06, 2010
brad good luck for the rest of the 2010 finals and life after playing for the doggies -you have been a true champion -I hope you remain at the club in some active capacity so you can continue to inspire

Ian Amy - 3:08 PM Monday, September 06, 2010
I've been a supporter for 60 years and there have been very few players better than you Johhno at the club during my time. You are of the nicest blokes I ever meet and I had the pleasure of doing that on two memorable times. A sad loss to the playing group and hopefully the team can do the righty and send you out with a flag which would be a fitting tribute. All the best for what ever you do in the future and thanks for all the good memories.

norman - 3:08 PM Monday, September 06, 2010

Ryan - 3:07 PM Monday, September 06, 2010
It's been amazing to grow up spending every weekend through the winter idolizing the way you play the game. Dig deep for the rest of the finals and show everyone why they shouldn't write you or the dogs off.

It was so nice to see a guy who was proud to be wearing a doggies jumper. You wore NO 33 and we used to call you little choc after Brian Royal. Well done champ on a great career.
