BRENT Prismall’s successful return to football and a confidence boost for veteran Scott Lucas were spin-offs from Essendon’s successful weekend.

While the Bombers’ big win over Hawthorn on Friday night stole most of the headlines, there was also good news at a lower level with the performance of other senior-listed players at VFL level.

While the Bendigo Bombers were humbled by 91 points in the VFL, all eyes were on off-season recruit Prismall – playing his first match since September 7 last year when he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament.

Essendon fans were also keen to see how Lucas, after being dropped, fared in the twos, while star draftee Michael Hurley was resuming from a quadriceps injury.

Bombers assistant Gary O’Donnell travelled to Stawell to watch Bendigo and said Prismall, despite only playing about 45 minutes, did enough in his first outing in the red and black.

“He looked to be reading the ball well and he got about a dozen touches,” O’Donnell told the Essendon web site.

“It was all you could ask of him at this stage and I know he will be pleased to be back out there. It has been a hard slog for him – it is great that he can now get back out there and do what he does best.”

Lucas won’t find it easy to slot straight back into the senior line-up after youngster Jay Neagle helped the Bombers run away from the Hawks on Friday night.

However he did regain some touch in front of goal, finishing with 4.4.

“Scott (Lucas) showed he was getting back to some form,” O’Donnell said.

“He started really well and had kicked three goals very early in the game. His opportunities were limited from that point on but there were signs there and hopefully he was feeling more confident as the game went on.”
