CARLTON president Stephen Kernahan has all but shut the door on any chance of Brendan Fevola resurrecting his AFL career at his former club, even if he makes a successful comeback in the VFL this year.

Fevola is currently in footballing limbo after being sacked by the Brisbane Lions earlier this year, almost a year and a half after he was shut out of the Blues for similar off-field issues.

The two-time Coleman medallist says he plans to play his first game for the year in VFL side Casey Scorpions' reserves side this weekend after returning from a holiday in the USA.

However, he can all but forget about eventually returning to the club where his AFL career began after Kernahan ruled out a reunion between the two parties.

"No, no … he's got a long way to go before he comes back to AFL footy. Good luck to him," he told 3AW on Tuesday night.

"It's very unlikely  [we'd have him back]."

Kernahan was then pressed further on the issue and asked if his answer would be different if Fevola had a good year in the VFL.

"I couldn't see Fev coming back to the Carlton Football Club," he said.

The dual premiership captain said Fevola had "his good and bad points" and had felt for the former Blue as his life unravelled - largely in the public eye - over the past three months.

"Seriously, it's a hard one. I haven't enjoyed seeing what's gone on the last few months and I hope he's alright," he said.

"[I] want to get him back on the track, he does his best stuff when he's playing footy.

"Hopefully he can get with Casey and get back on the track. That's the best thing for him.

"He's had a few issues [but] … stay out of the papers, get your head down and play footy, Fev."

Earlier on Tuesday, Fevola said he would train with Casey on Tuesday night and was hopeful of playing in a practice match this weekend.

"Hopefully I get through training and have a run around [game] this week," he said on Triple M's Rush Hour.

"That will be good to get out on the paddock. When you're an athlete and haven't played footy for a while, it will be fun.

"That’s what I’m best at doing, playing footy.

"Hopefully a few people come down and watch and hopefully I can get a kick."

Fevola also said on Tuesday he was the one who severed ties with management group Velocity Sports and not the other way around.
