THE AFL is unhappy with the decision to complete roadworks on the Monash Freeway in the lead-up to Friday night's blockbuster preliminary final between Collingwood and Geelong at the MCG.
The League is expecting a bumper crowd of around 95,000 to attend the game, which will also be broadcast live on Channel Seven.
The VicRoads website is advising those travelling to the football and airport from the south-eastern suburbs to allow extra time for the works between Chapel Street and Punt Road, which are scheduled at "various times" until Sunday.
It also says there are speed limits on the freeway during the day while lanes will be closed overnight.
AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou said the decision to resurface the road as people made their way to the ground was "dumbfounding".
"There is some asphalt being laid on the south-eastern inbound, but I'm not quite sure whether it's the right day to be doing it, particularly when people will descend on the MCG from 5pm onwards," he said.
"It's going to be bedlam. We will be making some interesting phone calls.
"There was always going to be a prelim final in Melbourne on Friday night, so it is odd."
Preliminary final weekend is the most popular round of September football given the restricted availability for grand final tickets.
Demetriou also said the AFL was doing its best to ensure more members of the public would be able to purchase grand final seats in the future.
"It is always a conundrum. I daresay if Collingwood and St Kilda get into the grand final next week, even the capacity of 200,000 wouldn’t be able to hold the number of people who will want to go to that game," he said.
"We have this issue every year. We made 2000 more tickets available a couple of years ago to be 26,000 for competing clubs, and hopefully we can get that number up in the future."
Meanwhile, Collingwood is set to break the all-time attendance record on Friday night.
The Magpies hold the record of 1,432,878, which was set across the 2007 season.
They need only 60,000 patrons to reset the mark and should reach it comfortably, as just over 3000 tickets were available on Thursday night.
