ST KILDA star Brendon Goddard says he hopes his future lies with the club he has called home for nine years.
Goddard has been linked with Greater Western Sydney in recent days and the talk stepped up a notch on Saturday when he said on Triple M radio that players would approach contract negotiations with a view to life after football.
But the 26-year-old said on Tuesday that he would love to finish his career as a one-club player.
"I'm not sure where it will lead. I'm happy here and I'm contracted to the end of next year and I hope my future lies here forever," he said.
"I love the footy club and I've given everything I can to this footy club and they've given everything back and I want that relationship to continue."
GWS has a two-year window in which it can sign uncontracted players and Goddard's current deal expires at the end of 2012.
He said his comments on the radio referred to the general consensus of AFL players.
"I'm not ruling it out, but the reality is when I was talking in terms of players looking towards the future, I was referring to what's happened in the past, and recently with Gold Coast, Nathan Bock and I guess Gary Ablett didn't rule out that they thought about their futures in footy," he said.
"It's raised a few eyebrows but at no point am I looking too far ahead. The position I'm in now is that I am signed until the end of next year and I'll cross that bridge when I get to it."
He said he felt for Melbourne youngster Tom Scully who had been the subject of much conjecture over whether he will sign with the Giants.
"Personally, sitting back I think it's a little unfair on him. It's probably something I'd be able to deal with a bit better because I've dealt with a bit more adversity in the past," he said.
"To put that pressure on Tom at such a young age is something he clearly doesn't want to have to deal with."
Goddard would not comment on whether he had been approached by rival clubs during past contract negotiations.
"I'm not going to go into details there. What happens behind closed doors in terms of contracts and who's chasing who, should stay there."
