Lions defender Matt Maguire will miss this Saturday night's critical clash against the Fremantle Dockers at the Gabba after he was suspended for one match by the AFL Tribunal tonight.

The AFL Match Review Panel charged Maguire with a Level Two engaging in rough conduct offence against Swans midfielder Jude Bolton during the first quarter of last Saturday night's match against Sydney.

The incident was assessed as negligent conduct (one point), medium impact (two points) and high contact (two points). This was a total of five activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Two offence, drawing 225 demerit points and a two-match sanction.

Maguire's existing five-year good record reduced the penalty by 25 per cent to 168.75 points and a one match sanction.

The Lions contested the charges laid by the Match Review Panel via videolink with the AFL Tribunal on Wednesday night but were unsuccessful in changing the initial verdict.

The one week suspension therefore stands which means that Maguire will miss this Saturday night's match against the Dockers.

It will be the first senior AFL game he has missed since joining the Lions via the 2009 AFL National Draft.
