JUST HOW many changes will Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse and St Kilda coach Ross Lyon make tonight for the grand final replay?

We know one. Michael Gardiner will come out for the Saints with a hamstring injury- that’s a given.

Who will come in - that’s another story.

The Magpies are relatively clear on the injury front with their selection board likely to be based around, a) Leon Davis’ big game form, b) Simon Prestigiacomo’s groin, and c) Tyson Goldsack’s unluckiness to miss last week’s drawn result.

In 1948 after the first drawn grand final in VFL history, Essendon coach Dick Reynolds and Melbourne coach ‘Checker’ Hughes made four changes between them.

For the Bombers, Harry Equid, Les Gardiner and Ron McEwin got the call up while Doug Bigelow, Wally Buttsworth and Harold Lambert missed out.

For the Demons, it was Doug Heywood who made way for Bob McKenzie.

There weren’t as many alterations to the original sides in 1977 when Collingwood drew with North Melbourne in the deciding game.

The only forced change Collingwood coach Tommy Hafey had to make was Doug Gott leaving the Magpies’ side owing to a cracked kneecap. His replacement was Chris Perry.

Kangaroos’ coach Ron Barassi kept his side unchanged and gave them a light week on the track, while Hafey trained the Magpies hard.

It was thought to be a deciding factor in the game.

This week, both Collingwood and St Kilda has been very low key and have kept their preparation under wraps ahead of the game that will decide the 2010 premiers.

But both sides are set to reveal some of their cards tonight at 5pm when the grand final teams are officially registered. Read them here first.
