REIGNING premier Hawthorn had a League-high six players selected in this year's preliminary squad of 40 players for the 2015 Virgin Australia All Australian Team.

It is a surprise then to see just one Hawk make the final cut in AFL.com.au's team, which was selected by reporters and announced this week.

Midfielder Sam Mitchell – the AFL's leading possession winner in 2015 – was the only Hawk selected and he is named on the interchange bench.

Those who were unsuccessful were defender Shaun Burgoyne and Josh Gibson, forwards Cyril Rioli and Jack Gunston, and midfielder Jordan Lewis.

After having no player selected in last year's team – despite Matt Priddis being named the Brownlow medallist – West Coast has taken over as the most represented team in our line-up.

The Eagles have four players – Priddis, Andrew Gaff, Josh Kennedy and Nic Naitanui – as well as coach Adam Simpson, who has done a remarkable job leading them to premiership favouritism.

Adelaide also has four players named – Taylor Walker, Eddie Betts, Rory Laird and Patrick Dangerfield.

Every top eight team is represented, with non-finalists Essendon, Port Adelaide and Greater Western Sydney each boasting one.

Captain Bob

The choice of captain came down to Western Bulldogs' skipper Robert Murphy and Adelaide star Walker as the only two club captains selected in this year's line-up.

While Walker's heroics in the second half of the season have been a joy to watch, Murphy's ability to unite the Bulldogs in his first season in charge earned the veteran the nod. Walker is named vice-captain.
