RICHMOND midfielder Nathan Foley says Geelong's loss to Carlton last week makes his side no more wary of them.

The Cats host the Tigers at Skilled Stadium this Sunday but Foley says last week's loss would not necessarily make them any hungrier.

"Geelong are always dangerous," Foley said on Thursday morning.

"They've been in incredible form in the past few years and are going to be the same challenge."

The Tigers last travelled to the Cattery in round two, 2009 and gave the competition favourites an almighty scare, leading by a point at three-quarter time before ultimately falling by 20 points.

Foley said his team would use that game, and the start to last week’s loss against Fremantle, as a confidence builder for this week.

“It is all about working on our structures and learning the game plan so we are continuing to build on that. I suppose you look at the game on the weekend and take out the positives where things did go right,” he said.

Tigers captain Chris Newman missed Thursday’s training session at Victoria Park with a head cold but he is expected to be fully recovered by the weekend’s game.

If he is unavailable, Jordan McMahon might be in line to be his replacement.

McMahon is yet to be used at senior level despite Richmond’s 0-5 start and Foley said he was impressed by the effort he has put in to force his way back into the side.

“Jordan has been around AFL football a long time so he knows how it works. He has put his head down and is working hard on the training track and in the gym,” he said.

Foley played the first game of his season against Fremantle last week after recovering from an ankle injury.

He says he is now feeling fully fit and ready to take on the year.

“I missed a fair bit of the pre-season so it was good to get through a full game with no issues.

"It was very exciting to get amongst the playing group again and put on the Richmond jumper.”
