Geelong midfielder Simon Hogan will be out of football indefinitely as he seeks treatment for depression.

"We have met quite extensively with Simon and his family, and, with the assistance of the doctors and various other people we are working as hard as we can to help him get through it," Cats general manager of football Neil Balme said.

"He is suffering an illness, and the most important thing is that he overcomes that illness. We are very confident and positive about the outcome but that will take time and we are not even thinking about it from a football point of view."

Hogan has played 21 games since being drafted by Geelong in 2006. He debuted in 2009 playing 10 games, including the qualifying final win over the Bulldogs, and 11 games last year.
