Andrew Swallow, Ed Lower and Shaun Atley will headline the Northern Lights’ first event for 2011, KNOWing Footy - a look behind the scenes at life in football.

AFL Umpire Michael Vozzo, past player Mark Porter and North Melbourne Player Welfare Manager, Neil Connell, will join the players to give Northern Lights’ members and guests an insight into many facets of the game on and off the field as well as life after footy.

KNOWing Footy will be held at Aegis Park (Arden St) on Thursday 7 April at 6.30pm.

The Chair of the Northern Lights, Jo Turton, said that KNOWing Footy was back better than ever.

“KNOWing Footy is one of our most popular events and it is always a lot of fun - people particularly enjoy hearing from our AFL Umpires and seeing how they answer the tricky questions about their decision making”, Jo said.

“This year there will also be the more serious side as we hear from Mark Porter about his life after football with North Melbourne and Carlton and Neil Connell about the players’ personal development and the welfare program.

“We are particularly excited to have such a great line up of players. Andrew Swallow is going to focus on his community work while Ed Lower will give us an insight into the rehab program he is undergoing,” Jo said.

The Northern Lights is one of the sponsors of Shaun Atley, North Melbourne’s number one draft pick, and the group is looking forward to seeing Shaun’s development this year, having already been selected for the first grade side.

“I know our members are keen to hear from Shaun and no doubt he’ll give us a good idea of what he has experienced making that step up from country to AFL football.”

KNOWing Footy was first run in 2005. The idea was to allow female footy fans from North Melbourne, and those who haven’t played the game, learn a bit more about what goes on behind the scenes at a football club - something they may not have experienced - but has evolved into an event that has topics of interest to everyone.
