BRISBANE will have to rewrite history to win this year's premiership unless it can sort out its goalkicking woes.

No premier since the turn of the century has been the least accurate in the competition.

But with four matches remaining – starting against Collingwood at the Gabba on Friday night – Brisbane is ranked dead last for goalkicking, converting just 48.2 per cent of its shots at goal.

It's a major flaw in the Lions' flag credentials.

The 2001 Brisbane and 2005 Sydney premiership outfits were both ranked 15th of 16 teams, going at 57 per cent and 58 per cent respectively. No one has been last.

Of the last nine premiers, seven of them have been ranked among the competition's top-four teams in terms of goalkicking accuracy

Brisbane's problems come from all over the ground.

WONKY RADAR It needs to be addressed, admits Rayner

Dan McStay, who has a reputation for inaccuracy, is the most reliable Lion in 2020, kicking eight goals from his 14 shots (57 per cent).

Cam Rayner (53), Zac Bailey (52) and Charlie Cameron (51) all go at just better than even, but beyond them, the numbers make for grim reading.

Eric Hipwood's raw figures of 17.14 aren't too bad, but factor in the shots that have missed everything and his conversion is just 42.5 per cent.

The star-studded midfield will not want to see these numbers.

Brownlow Medal favourite Lachie Neale is having a fabulous season, rightly lauded for his improved ability to kick goals, but he's going at 38 per cent.

Skipper Dayne Zorko and wingman Hugh McCluggage are having terrific seasons, until they're in front of the big sticks.

Zorko has six goals from 25 shots (24 per cent), while McCluggage has five from 24 attempts (21 per cent).

Coach Chris Fagan said the long break heading into the Magpies match had given Brisbane time to work on some problem areas.

"Goalkicking didn't need to be assessed, that's obvious," he said.

"We've had 12 days, so we've been able to spend a little bit more time practicing goalkicking than we would normally, but we're about to go into a period of compression so there won't be much training going on at all."

Of the last nine premiers, seven of them have been ranked among the competition's top-four teams in terms of goalkicking accuracy.

Richmond was second last year and West Coast second the year before, with both exceeding 60 per cent.

Brisbane is generating more opportunities than any other team, but unless it sorts out its problem, risks having a repeat of 2019 where it lost two finals despite having more shots at goal than its opponent.
